How to Cook Rice

Rice is not difficult to cook but it takes a little time. Here is what you do:

  • Using three times the amount of water as rice put the water into a pot and bring it to a boil. Slowly add the rice and bring it to a boil again

  • Lower the heat, cover the pot and allow the rice to simmer for 45 minutes with the lid covering the pot tightly.

  • After 45 minutes, turn off the heat and fluff the rice with a fork and cover the pot again

  • Let it stand for about 10 more minutes.

There are many, many varieties of rice. Long grain brown rice will fluff while short grain brown rice will be stickier. Other varieties will have slightly different flavors and degrees of stickiness. In addition to long and short grain rice try brown Basmati rice and brown Jasmine rice; they smell wonderful and have distinctive flavors.

Brown rice is more nutritious and has more fiber than white rice and has a lot more flavor. If you prefer white rice, use it. There is still a lot of value to white rice.

I would suggest that the best way to prepare rice is with a rice cooker. My rice cooker is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. I use it often and for more than rice. I cook other grains as well a beans and legumes in my rice cooker. The beans need to be soaked first but the result is great. I don’t have to watch anything and when the rice has finished it keeps the rice warm for me. It comes out perfectly every time.
