Many people choose a meat to eat for every meal. (I am very happy that you no longer do that.) What makes this habit an even bigger problem is the animal from which people frequently choose their cuts of meat. For breakfast its pork sausage or bacon, lunch is a ham sandwich or deviled ham (that’s an appropriate name) and for dinner its pork chops or BBQ pork.
As it turns out, pigs are absolutely filthy animals. In a study of clean and unclean meats done by Dr. David Macht at Johns Hopkins University in 1953 it was discovered that the flesh of rats, dogs, bears and cats were cleaner animals than pigs. While we think eating a dog is disgusting, somehow eating a pig is “okay”. The difference between clean animals, such as cows, sheep, goats, deer, and unclean animals has to do with the food they eat and their digestive systems.
Apparently just handling swine is a dirty job. Employees on hog farms are required to wear gloves, masks and protective clothing while working in the pig barns. Okay, I have heard enough!! I don’t want to be anywhere near these animals much less put their flesh in my mouth. Is this new information? Well, no. It’s been in Leviticus and Deuteronomy for a long time and these books are pretty clear about swine… don’t get near these creatures.
Lev 11:7-8 The pig has evenly split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is unclean. You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses. They are ceremonially unclean for you.
Deu 14:8 And you may not eat the pig. It has split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is ceremonially unclean for you. You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses.
(You may also want to read Isaiah 66:17 NLT.)
Remember that Jesus used a herd of swine to get rid of demons (Matt 8:31-32). I’m convinced; I’ll have my whole wheat English muffin plain.
