In Psalm 119 we read about God’s statutes (permanent rules). Verses 129 and 130 say “Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (NIV). In verse 152 we see that they were established to last forever, so the statutes given to us by God are still in effect.
There are statutes (or laws) given throughout the Old Testament. Everyone agrees on moral law (adultery is wrong, stealing is wrong, lying is wrong), sanitation laws (separate sewage from your dwelling place, wash your hands in running water) and judicial law (appoint judges over 10s and over 100s) but dietary law is usually ignored by most of us. There is agreement about smoking and drinking alcohol being a problem but in the minds of many people eating the wrong foods and eating foods in excess is “okay” even though these things can cause serious physical problems.
In order to appreciate anything that God has for us in this world we must have a body that is healthy, strong and mentally alert. Our body is the only way we can operate in this world so it is to our advantage to work with it and help it to function optimally. This is being in the will of God; He wants us healthy and He wants us to love His commands and hate every wrong path, including the wrong food path (Psalm 119:128Each of your commandments is right.
