47 Moderation

Good Morning,

We often hear people say “Oh, I eat anything and everything… I just eat in moderation.” That seems to be a common attitude. However, over 2/3’s of Americans are overweight and over 1/3 are obese and many people have physical problems, some serious and some just annoying. Did this happen because we consumed “all things in moderation?” I doubt it. We got this way by consuming anything and everything, in greatexcess.

The idea seems to be that if we eat moderately (whatever that means) we can eat all types of foods. We simply “cut down” and limit our consumption.

So… how are we doing?

How much do we consume of the items that we know are causing harm due to the excess consumption of added sugars, refined grains, sodium, fat, and saturated fat?

  • ·Added Sugars – 242% over the recommended upper limit.

  • ·Refined Grains – 200% over the recommended upper limit.

  • ·Sodium – 229% over the recommended upper limit.

  • ·Saturated fats – 158% over the recommended upper limit.

  • ·Solid fats – 281% over the recommended upper limit.

Obviously we are consuming too much of these items that cause harm. It would seem that dramatically reducing the amount we consume rather than eating them in moderation is necessary.

On the other hand, there are items that we know are very beneficial. Tomorrow we will see how we are doing with those foods. Until then, be mindful of the foods that some Americans (not us) over-consume.
