142 The Problem of Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that is increasing in our country. Why is that? Well… it is a disorder that has to do with the chemical changes that occur in our cells. The cause is said to be unknown but it is interesting to note that it occurs less frequently in parts of the world where the diet is based on rice, beans, potatoes and/or corn. The rich diet eaten in most Western countries appears to be the cause. Ohhhh…

Now that’s pretty interesting. Why would a particular diet cause that disease? With diabetes the disorder is one in which sugar in the bloodstream cannot pass into the cells of our body… but it is supposed to. I’m talking about glucose which is a simple sugar… a carbohydrate. It is the fuel that our cells need for energy. This is what gives us the ability to move, to think and do everything else. So there is the problem – the glucose is trapped in the bloodstream. Because of that the blood sugar levels become higher, eventually getting into the kidneys and ending up in urine. But sugar is not supposed to be in the urine. Oh, my. The glucose is in the wrong place.

But the insulin is not bad; it is simply doing what it was designed to do which is to move fat and sugar molecules into the cells. Unfortunately, there has been a breakdown in the way things are supposed to work. Hmmm… can anything be done about this? We’ll take a look next time but until then…
