201 Weight

Good Morning,

Out of curiosity I checked a height and weight chart that I have from Metropolitan Life Insurance. I really don’t think these charts are too helpful because the ranges are so great. A man that is 5’ 10” can weigh anywhere from 144-180 – that’s quite a range. When I look at the weight range for myself I realize that when I was at the high end of that range I was way too big (to my way of thinking). Here is a sample of what it looks like for men:

Here is a sample for women:

I never have figured out how you determine your “frame” size. This chart is considering 1 inch heels (why do they do that). They also say the weight includes 3 pounds of clothing for women and 5 pounds for men. I suppose that means the weights are inflated a bit. And there is the body fat measurement which is a consideration.

Joel Fuhrman has a way to determine appropriate weight that might be interesting to you. I found that his way of determining weight actually was accurate for me. For men he suggests 105 pounds for the first 5 feet and 5 pounds for every additional inch. That would put a 5’ 10” man at 155 pounds which agrees with the lowest end of the insurance chart. For women he suggests 95 pounds for the first 5 feet and 4 pounds for every additional inch. A 5’ 5” woman would weigh 115 pounds (again that’s the low end of the chart). He also notes that all formulas are only rough guides because of different body types and bone structure. The bottom line is… there is a big range and you are the only one who can know where the most appropriate weight is for you.

I hope this is helpful. It was fun to compare the two ideas.
